Corporate Headquarter Hirslanden Holding, Zurich

Zurich, 2002, renovation, office building and retail, 5‘765 m2

The building on Seefeldstrasse 214 in Zurich was leased from the Nationale Suisse insurance group by the Hirslanden private hospitals group. As the building, which was constructed in the 1970s, failed to meet the relevant structural and infrastructure standards (the façade had to be replaced due to functional and heating deficiencies), it was repaired in cooperation with the future leaseholder. The goal was to retain the property's value and therefore its long-term profitability. The commercial building, consisting of an eight-storey eastern and a six-storey western wing, stands out through its striking horizontal division. A protruding canopy roof and large display windows separated the ground floor from the structure above and reduced the building's presence at street level. Through a reduction of the architectural elements, the appearance of the heavily fragmented commercial building could be abstracted into a cubic unit. Although the horizontal appearance of the original façade was maintained, the mural design of the ground floor keeps the building anchored to the ground. The façade cladding, made from Zurich's characteristic grey sandstone, is a nod to the material preferred along the Seefeldstrasse. The increased proportion of glass in the new façade improves the light in the interior, despite retaining all the static elements. The comprehensive renovation, some of which was carried out while the building was in use, not only repaired the building from a technical perspective, but also fundamentally corrected its appearance, turning it into a representative piece of corporate architecture for Hirslanden Holding.
