Study commission Brunaupark, Zurich

Zurich, 2017, Urban development feasibility studies, 111'800m2 / 127’700m2

Brunaupark on the southern outskirts of Zurich is a heterogeneous area at the crossroads between the city, a public meadow and the entrance to the motorway. With the exception of the adjacent garden city district of Laubegg, the surrounding structures were mainly built after 1976, when the clay quarry at the foot of the Üetliberg closed down. Along the planning perimeter, today there are expansive residential structures set amid a green area and the Migros Brunaupark on the bustling Giesshübelstrasse, a rather unassuming and introvert shopping centre for the area. The goal of the study contract among four offices was the urban revitalisation of the area with new residential buildings and including the Migros. The plan required retaining the existing basements and entrances, and the construction density had to be developed both for a variant design plan (Gestaltungsplan) and building on the grounds (Arealüberbauung). The project from Stücheli Architekten envisions Brunaupark as a high-rise landscape functioning as a gateway to the city. The height of the buildings is harmonised with the environment, with lower buildings at the transition to the residential areas and high-rise accents leading into the city. Between the city and the public land, free-flowing open spaces form a spatial bridge. A new arrival area will be created in the direction of the public meadow, while the new Migros building clearly delimits the area facing Giesshübelstrasse.
